Material Obsession 2: More Modern Quilts with Traditional Roots

Beautiful palettes, frustrating instructions
As a fabriholic, I absolutely adore the patterns in this book--the fabric combinations just explode off the surfaces of the quilts. I really like the concept of pairing the co-authors' different variations on a starting pattern--this helps me see how I might improvise my own variation in turn. If you are into traditional patchwork and wild fabrics, as I am, this book is really inspirational. Very original, unique fabric combinations.I find the patterns to be pretty poorly written compared with other quilt books I own. Usually I can skim the pattern to get a sense of it, but these are clunky, written more in the tone of an amateur than most quilt books I've read. They also are extraordinarily labor intensive in a manner I find surprising considering how much you could do with strip quilting to achieve the same effect (in one case you are told to cut out 968 2.5" squares to create a large number of 36-patch squares--strip quilting and creative mixing and matching to achieve unique overall squares would be far more efficient). I expect I will actually go find other versions of the (widely known) patterns for my instructions and use this only for the overall patterns and inspiration.Twice when I've read through a pattern, the quilt shown is not the same as what appears in the instructions. For "Playground Days," you are instructed that to make the corner designs shown in the photograph, you have to go out and get the "Sunburst Kit from Marti Mitchell." I found it online and it is $13, which is annoying after how much I spent for this book; also, I expect to use my quilt books for the rest of my life (I've already been quilting 20 years) and how can I expect someone else's kit to be available 20 years from now? The other annoying example of this problem is in the pattern "Coming Up Roses," where you cut up striped fabrics to make a certain kind of square. There is a 3-paragraph-long explanation about how the "original quilt" is not the same as what you'll get if you follow the instructions, because cutting for the original quilt would leave you with bias-cut squares which are really hard to square up and get to lay flat. I find it annoying that the book will show you a photograph of one quilt, but then give you a different pattern because the quilt they've designed is too problematic? If they think it's this much of a problem, they should show photographs of both versions, and offer a very brief explanation that tells beginning quilters to do the non-bias-cut version.I think that this book would be more successful if they had hired someone else to write the instructions after testing out the patterns independently. Of course that's probably financially unreasonable, but anyone buying this book should be aware that while the patterns are stunningly beautiful, it falls short in some practical areas.

A New Favorite!
I bought this book specifically for one pattern, but was pleasantly surprised to find that there were many patterns in the book that I like a lot and that will be added to my list of quilts to make. The book itself is beautifully printed, includes good directions, and great images. It's thicker than many quilt books are, very satisfying to hold. This book had not been on my radar but I am SO glad that I bought it! It's a keeper

No pattern sheets
Did not like that the book was not complete with pattern sheets. That should have been disclosed by the seller in the listing. Dirty dealings.

Thought this might be a good source for outside the box design inspiration
Thought this might be a good source for outside the box design inspiration. Looking through, seems to be more a project book. Have not read all the writing yet, though, so it might reach some of my expectations

I would like to return this book. If it IS a new book it should be complete with patterns-they are missing. This is a book with Quilt PATTERNS-doesn’t help if the PATTERN SHEETS ARE MISSING!!!
