Beautiful, Well-Designed, High-Quality Salt & Pepper Grinders
These OXO salt & pepper grinders are extremely well-designed, and high quality, and beautiful.Yes, they are pricey... but they are worth it.The grinder is on the top (brilliant!) unlike most other grinders with bottom-mounted mechanismsthat leave bits of salt & pepper all over the table when you set them down. These therefore stayclean and neat after use. They are made of a silvery metal at both ends that is either stainless steel or aluminum, with athick transparent acrylic center column which looks and feels like glass, but is shatterproof. Also, the bottom is a dense black rubber that gives it a firm slip-resistant base, and protectswhatever tabletop surface it rests upon.Originally, I purchase from Amazon, a far more expensive and very similar-looking salt & papergrinder set made by Cole & Mason. They brag that they have been making the finest grindersfor over a century in England... and I fell for it. When they arrived, the packaging revealed thatCole & Mason now proudly outsource all their manufacturing to China. Within just a few months, the grinder mechanism detached from the top, and no amount of super-glue could fix it.It's very sad to see a proud and ancient English company like Cole & Mason sell-out to China, and ruin their reputation by producing pretty, but low-grade, Chinese garbage at premium prices. These OXO grinders are a much better choice... and they also hold twice as much salt & pepperas the inferior, yet pricier, Cole & Mason grinders. I recommend that you go with OXO. I haveseveral other OXO brand products in my kitchen that I've had for many years, and they all stillwork, and they all still look brand-new. I researched them online and discovered that OXO is basedin New York, and owned by a parent company based in Bermuda.

Great mills
I love the fact that the mill is on top, so the table does not get paper and salt on it, which always happened with the ones where the grinder is down...this may seem like a minor issue, but when one is always swishing pepper and salt of the table...or jiggling the grinder to knock the loose salt/pepper off.......The adjustment is at the top, as seen in the pic with the dots for indicators, while the part that is twisted, is the opposite end. (typical of most grinders, the part one turns is the opposite of the grinder head. Lastly, they are filled from the end oppsosite of the grinder head (typical). Large opening (most of the bottom of the grinder). Great capacity. Clear view, so one knows the contents and the amount there.I bought these for the dinning table. They look nice, just wish there was a smaller version, not bad, but I think 3/4 the size would look nicer. Much smaller, and then too small for the hand.Range of grind is pretty good, of the 5 settings, for salt, 2nd lowest is about that of table salt, 1 is heavy popcorn salt. Pepper, 1 is typcial for ground pepper, while 3 is about that of course.

What a relief these are!!
Pretty much everything I could ask for in a salt and pepper grinder set. The inverted design keeps all of the salt and pepper from getting all over the counter, table, etc., and the click settings for fineness seem to be repeatable and cover a wide range. They are easy to fill, with a wide opening on the bottom that is unobstructed by the mechanism, and screw caps that are secure but easily to open. There are rubber bumpers that make them easy to grind, even with wet hands. Criticisms: I wish the pepper grinder delivered a higher volume of pepper for cooking and coating steaks; it is fine for the table, and the salt grinder is adequate. It does take some getting used to turning them upside down to use, but the design definitely pays off in not leaving rings of spice every time you put them down, and having a much better coarseness adjustment. Well worth the cost!

Good salt and pepper mills but...
They are bigger than you think. Make sure they are the right size for you... We needed smaller and ended up using the Mc Cormick "disposables" which are simple to refill by using a hair dryer to remove the top (search YouTube).

Simple aesthetic and perfectly thought out design.
Was shopping for a pepper grinder to replace our old worn grinder and came across these. I was immediately intrigued by the top grinder design, which is a wonderful design improvement over the traditional bottom grinder. There is no longer pepper reside on the table, countertops or in the cabinets where we store them. The style is simple, clean and pleasing. I was hoping for a Danish modern teak wood style instead of stainless steel, but when I came across these, the aesthetic appealed to my senses and piqued my interest. The more I read, the more I was interested. And when they arrived I was not disappointed. The grinder themselves work great and have a quality feel when used. It took a few meals before I got used to tipping them upside down to grind, having always used bottom grinders. The easy to access grind setting is a nice feature when you want to salt a soup or pepper a tuna steak. The refill caps remove to reveal a nice and spacious portal for pouring in peppercorns or crystal salt without the usual issue of it spilling over because the hole barely adequate. Overall, these are a great investment. Pricey, but they will last for years and provide pleasing garnishment to your meals.

Easy to use and look great!
Okay I debated for a long time as to whether I should spend $50 on these shakers. I was leaning toward buying a less expensive OXO model but then decided I would never be happy if they didn't look good on the counter and table. To me that meant taller and without a visible logo. I'm so happy I bought these. The grind size dial is easy to use. They work very smoothly. With daily use the past few weeks, I've had no problem yet with the center metal tab piece falling off like others have mentioned. (If it happens I'll just glue it back on as one reviewer suggested.) I couldn't be happier actually. These are a perfect marriage of good looks and functionality.
