5 stars
This book is similar to a previous one I read by the author. It's more current but its chapters also tend to focus more on specific countries, not regions. It's well written and seems knowledgeable. If you're looking for a book with geopolitical observations, you'll enjoy it. I did.

Excellent Informative and Analytical Read
The Power of Geography is an excellent analysis of the importance of geography in the political realm of the past and the present. World history was and is still being shaped by the geography of our world. This book goes deep into why geography matters so much.

So good. Profiles 8 countries, one region, and space examining their influence historically, regionally, and globally and offering a glimpse of the future. 2nd book and still good.

Read!, and...
Running through time and geography in different parts of the world, it tells the story of where the idiosyncrasies of different regions and people come from.Yet, it becomes very clear, that even though geography guided the development, it has always been and still is one other crucial factor: Human folly, greediness, selfishness, religious fundamentalism, and criminality that are primarily shaping the world.Homo sapiens is as unattractive an animals as they come.In The End of the World is Just the Beginning by Peter Zeihan, which is essentially the same idea, but taken more into future projections. And if you really want to see the implications of how geopolitical factors might play out in the future, I recommend reading that book too. Why?In Marshall's book, geography created limitations and opportunities, but human creativity and folly created the world we liv in today. We have in many ways escaped , aggravated or improved our way of life in different regions depending on our ideas, not geography. Here comes the point: In Zeihan's book, the folly of our economic system based on representing value that doesn't exist, like a mega pyramid scheme, while we abuse the actual value (natural resources etc) cannot last, and when it collapses,THEN the limitations and opportunities by geography will kick in, in major ways. That is a fascinating read and a wake-up call - but these wake-up calls don't seem to hit home. We're way too busy with all kinds of nonsense.Enjoy two good reads this summer!

Great writing - explains a lot
Each chapter gives an historical overview of the country/area, so you find out where the conflict(s) started and why they exist. A fascinating look at the world.

Primer in geopolitics
Once again, Tim Marshall provides a clear explanation of geopolitical forces at work in our world. Here, he concentrates on middle powers and their challenges today and in the near future. Very interesting chapters on Ethiopia, the Sahel region, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Australia and more.

Not what I expected
More of a country history book than a discussion about current political and geographical challenges. I was disappointed.
