ZT- Pioneer Blanket Pin (Brooch) ** PRODUCT UPDATE ** Due to some issues we were having with the awl/pin being too brittle, we have changed the steel type for this piece. We are now using a milder steel for the pin which will have better sheer strength while not breaking under pressure. Because the pin is still made with a carbon steel it will suffice as an authentic 18th century piece. This is a classic piece of gear forgotten to the pages of history, but it is just as useful now as it was then. As a brooch to bind the wool blanket, an awl to pierce leather and pull slivers, to a rock solid fire steel, the traditional brooch is just as relevant to the modern survivor and back-country enthusiast as it was to the pioneers and their forefathers. We believe we have recaptured the spirit of times past with our version of this timeless piece. The brooch and awl are made of high carbon steel that are quenched and tempered to absolute perfection. This perfect mix of heat treatment allows for meticulous working with the point of the awl while allowing for proper binding of a very thick wool blanket and of course the ability to throw a shower of hot sparks when struck with a flint stone. Each piece is made in our shop (USA), one at a time and hand tested before being packed up. The steel for the brooch is high carbon steel with a hardness of 57-59 HRC. The awl is 1/8" and the brooch is 1/4" round stock, respectfully. This set comes packed in a small burlap (jute) bag with a nice piece of either Texas Flake or English Blue flint rock. Lightly oil to avoid rust.
