FITZCARRALDO - MOVIE [Blu-ray] [1982]

On the prompting of a friend (what? You've never seen Fitzcarraldo?!) I duly ordered this and watched it last night. It's a fascinating film, but the subtitles are really annoying. There are countless instances when a character will say something like "The reason you don't understand is very simple..." but the end of the sentence never appears - even though the character is obviously saying something. This was particularly bad with the conversation with the monks and the meeting with the old railway station master - where nothing really made sense and you have to guess what people have said. Hard to believe that this was ever released in this state, as it spoils what could have been a truly great film.

How to follow your dream - to the point of insanity. This story is based on the feat of Carlos Fitzcarrald, who transported a steamer over an isthmus in the Amazon in the 1890s, though in parts, not whole, and the ship weighed 30 tons, not 300. No special effects were used for this film - they really did it. Klaus Kinski perfect for the genius-cum-madman title character.

... one of my favourites, and with the fascinating addition of The Burden of Dreams.

A film without a lot of point and the real star is the river steamer. Nonetheless, an epic in its own right and worth the money.John.

If you're an aficionado of Kinski this is a brilliant film and must be watched in German with English subtitles otherwise you lose the strength of his acting. Dramatic scenery and story.

A tour de force. Great movie, great (true) story. Klaus Kinski is brilliant as usual...And then there is the story behind the story....

This really was a lovely old movie to watch. Fasinating sceens and the story was so interesting. I will rewatch this one.

Brilliant to. see it again, but has not aged well.
