Sippy Cup Baby Cie Farm Animals: Les Animaux de la Ferme Melamine Colorful dinnerware with wording

Cute melamine cup but water doesnt come out with the little plastic thing on the inside that goes into the lid holes. There are slits in the plastic, but they dont open enough. Without the insert the water just spills out when you tilt the cup. Sucking on the spout work either. Am i totally missing something here?

I saw this sippy cup when I became a grandmother to a little one born in France two years ago. Living in the US I thought it was a cute idea and a good head start for him to learn the farm animals names in french. After he started using it the cup was dropped and it cracked. He missed his cup and Grandma found this one to replace it. The original cup was green and white. Now he is happy to have his cup back.
