Despite being made in China or somewhere this is a very British concept - eminently practical and utterly eccentric! I run along a narrow canal path and often encounter walkers gabbling away unaware (or uninterested) in my rapid approach, or the multitudes that are plugged into some sort of device and therefore unaware of anything at all. The finger bell changes all that! One twang of this puppy and the birds in the trees take flight not to mention the absent-minded pedestrian!I would say this is not only a necessary but an essential piece of running equipment if you are in the habit of encountering sentient obstacles in a relatively confined environment whilst running. I gave myself a nasty groin strain a while back trying to avoid a startled rambler which immediately curtailed my exercise; this device gives a clear signal of my approach and therefore makes that kind of hazard much less likely now.Friends of mine have laughed at me for running with what is effectively a brass bike bell on my finger (indeed that is why many will move out the way at the sound of it - because they think they're about to get mowed down by a vehicle which is not a bad thing when you're involved in a time trial!) but it makes for a much easier, swifter and less hazardous run as far as I'm concerned.You might think it's a little awkward to operate, in that you have to twist your thumb over to the 'pinger' to sound the bell, but it is possible to simply shake it to get a gentle chime. This is what I do most of the time because it provides a slightly quieter and less alarming sound but with the talking walkers and the iPlodders I give it the full treatment; it always delivers.

Bought as a joke gift for a friend that runs a lot. It was well packaged and looked pretty good. Bell sound was decent and appeared to go down well as a gift. I run like Frankenstein falling down a flight of stairs so I haven't tried this out in the wild to say if it works.
